In early 1973, Stanley N. Cohen and Annie CY Chang, Stanford University and Herbert W. Boyer and Robert H. Helling, University of San Francisco, conducted the first genetic engineering experiment by using a technique known as recombinant DNA. It had all begun a year ago. During the recess of a conference held in Hawaii on plasmids, Boyer and Cohen, after enjoying a sandwich on a desktop with several cafes, had concluded that the investigations of both groups could be supplemented for the first genetically modified organism.
